Spring Term 2023 (Archive)

A snap shot of a few special days in Term 4 ...

Our Local Area: Drayton Village

Welcome Back to term 4!

We hope you have had a restful half term and have enjoyed the spring sunshine over the past few days. We can’t wait to get started with lots of fun learning for the rest of this term and hope for more dry and bright weather – we have lots of outside events planned!

Our local area topic will teach Puffins about their locality beyond the school gate, building on children’s knowledge and understanding of their school environment. Children will explore their local area using first hand observation to enhance their locational awareness along with developing essential map and fieldwork skills. This topic will provide a perfect opportunity for Puffins to gain a greater insight into where they live!

As always, our writing will be linked to our topic. Puffins will be using their persuasive letter writing skills to persuade Mr Knight to allow us to visit places in the local area. I wonder if we can be persuasive enough? You will also be receiving a letter from your own child, as we are hoping to persuade YOU to sponsor US as we undertake a sponsored walk around the village! Keep your eyes peeled for letters coming home later in the term.

In maths, we will complete and assess the work we have done on addition and subtraction within 20. We will move on to place value within 50; counting forwards and backwards within 50, representing numbers up to 50 and comparing objects and numbers within 50. We will also be thinking about mass and volume and using scales for measuring.

In Science we will complete our unit of work on materials and will be carrying out an investigation to see which material would be most suitable for Hilda Hen’s umbrella. British Science Week takes place this term too (10th-19th March), and as part of this, we will be holding a Science Day. More information regarding this will follow soon!

Our whole class reading book, ‘The Hen Who Wouldn’t Give Up’ (by Jill Thomlinson), will link nicely with the theme of spring and will teach us the importance of perseverance and resilience.

This term Puffins will be having a break from forest school, and will attend later in the school year.  Puffins will have 2 PE slots this term (on a Tuesday and a Friday morning), so please make sure PE kits and suitable shoes are in school for these sessions.

Please do look at the curriculum map for more details of what we will be focussing on this term.

We look forward to talking to you all at the upcoming parents’ evenings which will take place later this term.

Many Thanks for your support,

Puffins Team.

TITANIC

This term our topic is The RMS Titanic – we will be learning about this iconic vessel and how it came to a tragic end. The children will learn about the ships construction and what it was like on-board!

Our writing this term will focus on a diary entry from a passenger travelling on The Titanic. As always, we will be using a talk for writing approach which will enable children to become really confident with the structure and language used in diary writing, before they create their own diary entries!

Our whole class reading books this term will introduce the children to Roald Dahl. We will start with the story of The Enormous Crocodile and will finish with The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me.

In maths children will be developing their addition and subtraction skills within 10 and then 20. There will also be plenty of practical opportunities for children to learn when we teach both the height and length and weight and volume units of work.

Forest School will re-start for Puffins, but this term all children will have their session on a Friday. They can come to school dressed in their forest school clothes but will need their uniform to change into afterwards.

As always, we have attached a curriculum map which includes further details on our topic coverage this term.

We look forward to another great term of hard work and fun.

The Puffins Team.
