Our Local Area: Drayton Village
Welcome Back to term 4!
We hope you have had a restful half term and enjoyed doing some nice things as a family. We can’t wait to get started with lots of fun learning and hope for more dry and bright weather as spring draws nearer.
Our local area topic will teach Puffins about their locality beyond the school gate, building on children’s knowledge and understanding of their school environment. Children will explore their local area using first hand observation to enhance their locational awareness along with developing essential map and fieldwork skills.
Puffins will be using the story of 'The Town and Country Mouse' as a focus for writing. This will include utilising their persuasive letter writing skills to persuade the mice to visit Drayton.
In maths, we will complete and assess the work we have done on addition and subtraction within 20. We will move on to place value within 50; counting forwards and backwards within 50, representing numbers up to 50 and comparing objects and numbers within 50. We will also be thinking about mass and volume and using scales for measuring.
Our whole class reading book, ‘The Hen Who Wouldn’t Give Up’ (by Jill Thomlinson), will link nicely with the theme of spring and will teach us the importance of perseverance and resilience.
In Science we will complete our unit of work on materials and will be carrying out an investigation to see which material would be most suitable for Hilda Hen’s umbrella. British Science Week takes place this term too (8th-17th March), and as part of this, we will be doing some fun experiments linked to the theme, ‘Time’. We will also have a visit from Bright Sparks Science, who will lead a whole school assembly to showcase their after school club, which will run in Terms 5 and 6.
This term Puffins will have Forest School on a Monday and PE on a Wednesday and Friday.
Please do look at the curriculum map for more details of what we will be focussing on this term.
We look forward to seeing you all at the upcoming parents’ evenings which will take place on Tues 12th and Thurs 14th March.
Many Thanks for your support,
Puffins Team.
HMS TITANIC
This term our topic is The RMS Titanic – we will be learning about this iconic vessel and how it came to a tragic end. The children will learn about the ships construction and what it was like on-board!
Our writing this term will focus on writing a non-chronological report about The Titanic. As always, we will be using a talk for writing approach which will enable children to become really confident with the structure and language used in report writing, before they create their own reports.
Our whole class reading books this term will introduce the children to Roald Dahl. We will start with the story of The Enormous Crocodile and will finish with The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me.
In maths children will be developing their addition and subtraction skills within 10 and then 20. There will also be plenty of practical opportunities for children to learn when we teach both the height and length and weight and volume units of work.
PE this term will take place on Wednesday and Friday, so please ensure children have kits in school on these days.
As always, we have attached a curriculum map which includes further details on our topic coverage this term.
We look forward to another great term of hard work and fun.
The Puffins Team.
