Welcome to Kingfishers' class page!
We have been extremely impressed with the way in which Kingfishers class have begun their time in Year 5. The children have quickly adjusted to school life after the summer break and have made a great start embedding our school’s routines and expectations.
Our topic for this half-term is The Vikings.
We will be researching, amongst others, how and why the Vikings invaded Britain, how their longboats helped them, what effect this had on the Anglo-Saxons and whether we can still see evidence of the Vikings today.
Our latest writing topic involves a different type of invader – those from space! The class are producing recounts of an imaginary sighting of aliens, using recount features and introducing SPaG skills they have been learning this term. We will soon be moving on to Kennings, which have their roots in Viking history….
Battle Speeches - During last half term, inspired by Achilles' speech to his troops before battling the Trojans, Kingfishers created their own to inspire their troop to victory!
In reading, we have begun the story of the Shadow Forest by Matt Haig, set in Norway. This is a story of a mysterious forest inhabited by many strange creatures, and ruled by the equally mysterious ‘Changemaker’. The class will continue to develop their skills in answering ‘VIPERS’ comprehension questions.
In maths, we have been working addition and subtraction, developing our knowledge of formal methods, inverse operations and multi-step problems. We are now moving onto Statistics, where we will learn to interpret graphs, charts and tables. In addition to this, we practice arithmetic skills (mental maths) and times tables daily, with a particular focus for each set every week.
Here are our topics for other areas of the curriculum:
Science – Earth and Space
Computing - Online safety
RE - Sikhism
PSHE – Celebrating difference
PE – Tag rugby (Thursday and Friday)
Music – inc Composition/Looping and Remixing/Musical Theatre
Forest School – Working on FS skills (Wednesday)
Kingfishers class are continuing to work with enthusiasm and determination this half-term. We are very proud of their efforts and are looking forward to this continuing in the year ahead.
