Autumn Term

Welcome to Kingfishers' class page!

We have been extremely impressed with the way in which Kingfishers class have begun their time in Year 5. The children have quickly adjusted to school life after the summer break and have made a great start embedding our school’s routines and expectations.

Topic

This half-term, Kingfishers will be studying Ancient Greece, including the origins of the Olympics, Democracy and various myths, the story of the Horse of Troy, and much more!

In our writing lessons, we have begun to look at Greek myths and their features, and will be creating our own, including our own mythical creatures. Following this, we will study the story of the Trojan Horse, and produce a battle speech to rally their troops as they attack Troy!

Whole Class Reading

We have begun our reading lessons by exploring Boy in the Tower, written by Polly Ho-Yen. This book focusses on the themes of family, isolation, and the environment, and the class are enjoying following the story of Ade and the happenings in his part of London, including the mysterious Bluchers. Throughout all of our reading lessons, we will be focusing on using our VIPERs reading skills. These skills are vocabulary, inference, prediction, explain, retrieve and summarise.

Maths

In maths this half term, we will be exploring place value, addition and subtraction column methods, and statistics. Children will be building on the knowledge they have gained so far in their learning.

Welcome to our class mascot – Rio! He was kindly handcrafted by one of the schools’ parents, and has a certain role to play in class each day.

Rio will sit on the desk of a pupil who has passed their secret mission the day before…..

What is this secret mission? Each day, we secretly choose, at random, a child to demonstrate the focus of the day (e.g. participating, working hard, listening well etc). The class will be unaware of who has been chosen and so will all focus on achieving this target. If they pass their mission, the mystery student will be revealed! However, if they do not pass, their identity will remain anonymous, and as a class we will reflect on improvements we can make for the next day.

Eagles class have a similar mascot, and have made various items for him – this may be something Kingfishers may also like to do!

Here are our topics for other areas of the curriculum:

Computing - Online safety

RE - Sikhism

PSHE – Being Me in My World

PE – Building football skills (Thursday and Friday)
