Sports Gallery

At Drayton C P School we are very proud of our participation and achievement in sporting activities.

We have a series of whole school house competitions throughout the year and we participate in many sporting activities organised by other organisations.

Mrs Caudle (our PE co-ordinator) and Mr Hand (our sports coach) work hard to make sure that the children at our school have as many opportunities to experience and participate in a wide range of sporting challenges.

On this webpage we aim to give you a flavour of the extent of our involvement in sports and the amazing positive effect it has on the pupils and the school community.

Vale Tag Rugby Festival November 2014

On Monday afternoon 10th November, a team of 10 children travelled to Wantage to take part in the Vale Tag Rugby Festival.
We played four games in our group and won two and drew two games.
The children played some great rugby and showed off the skills they have acquired during the recent rugby PE sessions and the afterschool club.  We were excited to hear we had made it into the quarter finals and beat St. Nicholas, Abingdon 4-3 who are usually one of our main competitors.  This gave us a place in the semi finals.
Next we were up against the reigning champions, Steventon School.  Although the team played well. We sadly we lost, but overall came 4th in the festival.  It was a very exciting afternoon, thoroughly enjoyed by all and we look forward to taking our team to the Chairman’s Cup Tag Rugby Competition in May 2015.

The team were a credit to themselves and represented Drayton School in a competetive and sporting fashion.  Thank you to Mrs. Lester, Mrs Rowlands, and Mrs. Ballantyne for taking the children to the festival and supporting them there.

Abingdon Partnership Schools
Cross Country – Tilsley Park 2nd October 2014
Last Thursday saw Drayton School take a boys and girls team to compete in the Abingdon Partnership Schools Cross Country Event.
This year the race was held using a different format – for the younger children, a lap of the grounds of Tilsley Park (900m) and the older children this was preceded by a lap of the track (1300m).
We had a wonderful afternoon in the sunshine at this well run event. The children really enjoyed competing in the competition and supporting and cheering each other around the track.  Most of the children finished mid field.
A fabulous performance by Mack Mellish saw him finishing 3rd in his category, which was a massive achievement.  Well done Mack!
Thanks to all the members of staff and adults who transported, supervised or just came to support, and a big thanks to the children for doing your best.

School Games Award 13/14

This is our School Games mark which we have achieved this year.  This is a huge improvement on our last year’s Bronze, and the school should be proud of this achievement which means that we have hit criteria based on participation, clubs, competition, holding a school games day, engaging less active children, and much much more!

Big pat on the back for us all!.

Primary Leadership Academy Day – Tilsley Park

Seven aspiring young leaders from years 4 and 5 were selected to attend this conference with Mrs. Lester.  The day was aimed to inspire the leaders to go back to school and work alongside the PE Coordinators to create a plan identifying areas of change.  They were also set a challenge of running a School Games event in a sport of their choice.  They will organise, run and officiate the event. The children had a great day, playing team building games, observing young ambassadors leading a session, taking part in a dodgeball workshop, and creating an action plan for their school.  Thank you Mrs Lester for agreeing to work with them next year to achieve this.

Quad Kids - 18th June 2014

On 18th June 2014  Mrs Caudle and Mrs Lester took two teams of athletes to compete in the annual Quad Kids Athletics competition held at Tilsley Park.  We had a fabulous morning of long and short distance running, jumping and throwing supported and cheered on by parents.  Thank you to all the parents who helped with transport to and from the event, we couldn’t have done it without you.  Unfortunately, we only managed to come 12th and 13th out of 15 teams.  Each individual child’s scores were kept on a spreadsheet, and I can tell you that there were some fantastic individual performances by Andrew and Max being ranked 14th and 19th respectively.  Well done to all athletes for the effort and support you gave as a team.

School Games Day - 19th June 2014

This year we decided to hold a School Games Day based around the Countries of the World Cup.

We invited a professional dancer to work with each of the classes, each of the classes having chosen a World Cup Nation.  Two football coaches gave up their time to work with each class on football skills, and had games and penalty shoot outs.  Years 4,5 and 6 played "crab football".  McDonalds kindly sponsored us with healthy snacks and water for the day.

All this culminated with a family assembly where each class shared their dances and activities they had taken part in during the day.

Thank you for the School Games Day pack of wristbands, flags, trophies and bunting which helped us along on the day!

Tag Rugby Competition

Mr Mayer and Mr Rose took a mixed team of children from years 5 and 6 to play in the annual Tag Rugby Competition at Horspath in Oxford on 21st May.  The children had been coached by Mr Rose for a few weeks prior to the competition.
A great afternoon was had by all.  Although we did not progress further than the group stages, we came 9th out of 13 teams in our group.
As the organiser stated "No matter where you came at the end, remember you finished higher in the County than those who didn't come."  The feedback from the referees about the standard of play was great to hear.  Well done team Drayton!  Unfortunately at this time I have no photos, but will add any if they are available.

Golf Taster Sessions

On Monday 28th April we were lucky enough for a golf Professional Lyle Hastie from Drayton Golf Club to visit the school to give two of our classes a taster of golf, chipping and putting.  Puffins and Eagles classes had a half hour session in a small group, and the progress in that half an hour was amazing.

There are details of Junior Holiday courses, together with weekend sessions for 5 - 14 year olds at Drayton Golf Club, on the School Sports Noticeboard or please ask Mrs Caudle for more details.

On 3rd April we held our first Endball House Competition.  Endball is a simplified version of Netball played without hoops.  Thank you to all who competed, KS1 in a Endball scoring skills session, and the whole of KS2 including the House Captains who refereed from Eagles Class.  Thank you again Mr Hand for organising the competition.  All the scores were added together, so Congratulations to  the overall winners of the 2014 House Endball competition - Simmonds House with 575 points.  Take a look at the sports noticeboard for the full results and lots more photos.  Our team house points competition this year is very close, with Hoy and Simmonds House at the moment in equal first place with 300 points, with two events to go.

Sports Workshop 25th March

On 25th March, Mr. Hand worked with a group of children identified as gifted and talented in an aspect of sport within the school.

Stations were set up around the hall for the children to work on their agility, balance, strength and co-ordination.  Each station had activities designed to challenge each age group of children, these included reaction ball, high and low balance beams, volleyball, agility ladders and cones, tricep dips and flexibility and strength activities.

The children had a great session being set challenges by Mr. Hand.  Have a look at all the photos on the Sports Noticeboard.

Tennis Taster Session for KS1

On 18th March, we were joined by Olly Carr, Tennis Coach from Vale of White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre.  He came to give the KS1 children a taster of the tennis skills they could learn.  Have a look at the Sports Notice Board for more of the photos.  All the children brought home a flier about a free coaching session at the Centre, it would be great if some got the opportunity to go.

House Dodgeball Competition 13/2/14

On 13th February we held our first Dodgeball House Competition.  Each class played against the other houses in their classes.  Robins and Puffins scored points for their house teams by playing skills based activities.

We combined all the points scored which gave us our final result.

Congratulations to our joint winners - Simmonds and Ennis Houses scoring 100 points for their houses.  Hoy House in third place scoring 50 points and finally Farah House with 25 points.

Take a look at the school sports noticeboard to see how the House points stand after three events.

Under 9 Football Championships

On 11th February  Drayton, Mrs Caudle took a mixed team of children to the Under 9 Football Championships at Tilsley Park.  For many of the children, this was their first experience of representing the School in a competition out of school, and indeed playing on Astroturf.  The children played in a pool of four other schools.  The team always had to have two girls on the pitch, so Rebecca and Theia were shattered  by the end of the afternoon.  The children all had an opportunity to play in different positions which was good experience.  There were some fine saves from Zane and Toby in goal and great goals from Oliver.  Well done everyone for showing great teamwork and sportsmanship.  We won one game, and lost three, so sadly did not progress to the next round.

I’m sure the children would like to send out a big thank you to Mr Biddle for coaching the team and helping with transport and some skills coaching the week before the fixture.  We had a great afternoon.

Dear Drayton Community Primary School,

Congratulations and thank you for being one of the first 500 schools in the country to share the date of their Sainsbury’s School Games Day and blog about their intra-school (Level 1) competition plans for 2013-14.

As a result of your engagement outlined above, you have met the award criteria for half term 1 of this year’s Reward and Recognition Scheme. We are therefore delighted to provide confirmation of your prize – a Sainsbury’s School Games competition pack! Your pack will be delivered directly to your school in the week beginning 6 January 2014 and will contain information and ideas on how you can utilise the resources within to support your intra-school competition delivery.

House Tag Rugby Competition

On 12th December we held our second House Competition of the School year, Tag Rugby.  KS1 and KS2 took part separately, but points earned combined to find our overall champions.  Congratulations to Hoy House who won with an impressive 25 points.  Have a look on the School Games blog to see the fully results.

Vale Schools In2Hockey Tournament
On Monday 2nd December, Mrs Caudle took a team of 8 boys to compete at Tilsley Park in the Vale In2Hockey tournament.
Drayton played in one of three leagues, where we played three matches.  Unfortunately we were knocked out at this stage, winning, drawing and losing one game.  Full results attached.
The team played really well together, showing real team spirit and determination.
Well done boys, it was a pleasure to take you and see how your skills have improved and watch you play so well.
Mrs Caudle

Gifted and Talented Workshop

Our first Gifted and Talented workshop was run recently by Mr Taylor for KS2. These workshops will take place, one each term, focussing on ABCs  - Agility Balance and Coordination. The first workshop was on balance and offered the children challenging tasks involving balance and how to improve stability.

The children have been  invited because they have been identified by teachers or coaches as G&T in PE.  The children came up with words to describe what G&T looks like.

Swimming Gala

On Monday 18th November, Mrs Caudle took eight of our children from years 5 and 6 to Radley College pool to compete in the Abingdon Partnership of Schools Swimming Gala.

They put on a fine display of strokes in the individual heats, and in the medley and front crawl relays.  A special mention for the children who took part in the Butterfly competition in which our girls came second, well done Loren and Libby.  Two of the large Abingdon schools who came first and second will go on to represent Abingdon in the finals.  As yet we are unsure whether we will be representing the villages.

Congratulations to you all for swimming so well, and representing your school brilliantly.

Mrs Caudle

Tag Rugby

On Monday 11th November, a mixed team of eleven children from years 5 and 6  competed in the Vale Tag Rugby Festival held at Grove Rugby Club.

We played in one of three leagues, which included last year's overall winners, which did not fill us with confidence!

The team played really well together, drawing our first game, losing the second by one try and by the time we played our last group game, we were flying and won this 6 - 2.  However we were one point short of progressing to the semi-finals.  A great fun afternoon, and good experience for everyone ready for the Chairman's Cup later in the academic year!  Thanks to Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Heery for cheering the team on and transporting the children.

Mrs Caudle.

House Cross Country Competition - 25th October 2013

The House Cross country took place 25th October, on a drizzly cold morning. All the children from all years raced against children in their classes, earning points for their houses.

We had a fantastic energetic start to the day, and as you can see from the children's faces, they really enjoyed the run.

Congratulations to Ennis house, the winners by 55 points, followed in joint second by Hoy and Farah, and finally Simmonds.

Well done to everyone who competed the course.

Drayton School - High Quality Physical Education and School Sport

Carolyn Murphy -Partnership Development Manager -The Vale PE/School Sport Partnership

I have worked with Drayton School over the past 12 years in partnership with the current and past Headteacher and PE Coordinator. Throughout this time the leadership and inspiration of the Headteachers and the PE Coordinators have been outstanding.

I believe that Drayton provides an excellent experience of PE and School Sport for the pupils and this is demonstrated in their successful application for The School Games Kitemark; we are hoping for the GOLD standard without a doubt next year!

I recently had the pleasure of seeing their Y5/6 trained Sports Leaders assist with the whole organisation, coaching and officiating of The Vale Schools Y3/4 Golf tournament!!  What a spectacle that was.

I believe that Drayton are using the PE/Sport Premium fund to develop high quality PE and Sport throughout their school.  They have appointed a trained deliverer of Physical Education and their PE coordinator has not only attended OFSTED and other training but shared good practice with all Vale Schools recently at a PE Conference.

I can only see PE and School Sport at Drayton go from strength to strength and, of course, we know that fit, active and healthy young people leads to excellent academic results!

Good luck
